“We had an amazing time and fell in love with Zambia! Mwamba was a very good camp in a great location. The hides were a great bonus. The sleep out was fantastic and although we didn’t see any game, it was wonderful being out in the open (and cooler) air under the stars, watching the moon go down!”
Caron and Steve – October 2015
Our trip to South Luangwa National Park was hugely enjoyable and eventful; the season is considered to be two months ahead of what it should be with low waters levels in the rivers and some concern for later in the year. There was abundant wildlife with excellent sightings – in particular a leopard taking a live impala up a tree chased by 3 hyena, at least 182 crocodiles (I stopped counting) feeding on a dead hippo and (the highlight of the trip for me!) 32 ellies crossing the river. Many thanks for recommending Kaingo; it’s everything a safari camp should be.
Richard and Jackie from London – June 2016
“Mwamba – Excellent camp. First rate guide. Marvellous wildlife.”
Lloyd and Jacqueline from Cambridgeshire – September 2016
“Kaingo – we were lucky to be assigned Patrick (again) as a guide – he is very good, knows the area and the animals like the back of his hand and being interested in photography himself, was good at placement of the vehicle on sightings. Game viewing was excellent, Leopards galore and good sightings of everything else.”
Kevin and Lynne from Kent – August/September 2016
“We loved Kaingo camp – the camp managers were really great and the food was superb!”
Joy, Warren, Leonard & Elizabeth from America – September/October 2016
“Both Mwamba and Kaingo are unfenced and allow wildlife interactions right on your doorstep. the camps are designed so as to have low impact on the environment, good use of local materials, Unpretentious, and as natural as possible while still allowing sublime luxury.”
“Excellent accommodation which manages to be both secluded, but also close to the central boma for meals and for the start of the activities. The accommodation is spacious and with excellent facilities.”
“Integration of hides wihin camp made this a standout for design”
“Private open-air gazebos directly on the river bank for each tent to maximize viewing. Open-air dining. Hides onsite.”
“The central boma is nicely laid out and the dining room is a great place to meet people, The accommodation is excellent and spacious.”
“Understated rustic with all that you need on an African safari. Wonderfully dark at night with a lot of night noises to listen to. “
Lorraine Van der Merwe
“Unobtrusive yet very comfortable accommodation which didn’t jar with the peaceful location right by the river. Perfect for watching the wildlife. Yeah feel you are in the animals’ rerritory rather than they are in you r territory. The perfect balance has been achieved. “
“you feel really comfortable”
“3 activities per day makes this experience standout as top value”
“3 activities per day puts Kaingo well ahead of other camps in terms of value and provides an optimal experience”
“For South Africans way too expensive, but for those who can afford, the all inclusive rate is good value for money.”
Lorraine Van der Merwe
“it is definitely worth it”
“Perfect Service and Guiding respecting personal interests.”
“Superb food, thoughtful and engaging hosts, superb game viewing in game rich areas which are a privilege to witness, excellent, knowledgeable guiding. this is one of the planets last Edens and it is worth every cent.”

“The experience we had at Kaingo was priceless and the memories will last forever”
“The facilities are first rate from the chalets, private stands on the river, hides for elephants and hippos to the open iron wood bar and dining area. The guides are exceptional and very experienced especially Patrick and Meyam. I have come back 4years years in a row to this camp because there is no other place I have found with with the requirements needed by me, namely wildlife including birds, exceptional guides, facilities, cuisine, outstanding management and staff and involvement of the owner. All of this in the most beautiful setting along the river at a price well below other high end camps I have been to in the past.”
“The team and Shentons commitment to the local area and community make it a very special place to stay in”
“Three activities a day, wonderful food, delightful staff, talented, engaging guides at half to one-third the price of what one pays in Botswana!”
“We got much more for our money that we expected. Wonderful guided tours, stunning food and the champagne breakfast in the ebony grove will never be forgotten. Would have paid more! “
“Every bit of possible way to generate, use and save energy is applied here. Regarding fauna and flora, it is cared for, respected and conserved in every possible way. Derek, the owner, is a conservationist par excellance because of his relationship with nature. He knows nature.”
Lorraine Van der Merwe
“Solar power. Not having any electricity points in rooms cuts down on unncessary waste of power”
“Solar powered with locally collected already dead wood for heating boilers, local materials used entirely for the building of Mwamba which in turn supports local village economies, vegetables and fruit produced locally in Mfuwe at the well managed garden along with free range eggs, soft furnishings produced by local business Tribal Textiles. Shenton Safaris is an active member of SLCS and ZCP carrying out anti poaching patrols and snare collecting. They are engaged in the local community charities , schools and employ a great number of people from the area which in turn benefits conservation.”
“What to say. The property speaks for itself. “
“Kaingo Safari Camp employs local people from the areas around South Luangwa, supports an orphanage for children in Mfuwe, buys the materials for camp building etc locally (reed mats, thatching etc, supports local conservation groups (SLCS, ZCP and Chipembele), supports local business such as Tribal Textiles and is activly involved in anti poaching.”
“Local guides and staff. Local artisan wares displayed on site as well as trip to neighborhood and Project Luangwa facility. “
“Owners, staff and guides support multiple community projects, display articles for sale by Project Luangwa and local artisans, include visit to local arts and crafts venues. “
“Project Luangwa was set up by Shenton Safaris along with other lodges in order that the local people benefit from tourism. “
“Shentons are part of many community projects in the valley.”

“Exceptional Guiding: Andrew”
“Fantastic crew, Mayhem, Patrick, Andrew “
“I learned so much. I was inspired to the point of coming back home to enroll for a course on field guiding. I can’t single out one specific guide as it would not be possible. Each and everyone guids uniquicly and with total profession. “
Lorraine Van der Merwe
“It doesn’t get any better than being guided by Sylvester Mbaama or Andrew Mweeta, engaging, talented, knowledgeable guides who gear their drives to the interests of the guests. They know how to find incredible sightings!”
“Meyam and Patrick are exceptional guides”
“Meyam was a fantastic guide so knowledgeable, calm, polite and interesting we learned so much “
“Our guide was Patrick. Knowledgeable, with a knack of finding not only the obvious, but also the small and less “popular” animals, and best of all, possessed of a great sense of humour. Thanks to him, we got into some great positions for wildlife watching, and also spent most of the days laughing.”
“Patrick and Andrew were our guides for the 8 days. Their experience and knowledge added an enormous amount to our encounters on the ground. A huge depth of experience in animal behaviour meant we had encounters and experiences that will last for ever.”
“Patrick is the finest guide I have experienced in dozens of camps over many years.”
“Patrick Njumbu is the best is Africa! “
“Saw a lot of up close game, and especially on the walking safari explained completely what we needed to do if we ran into animals. Learned a lot about flora and fauna.”
“Sly was stellar. Very knowledgeable, charming, always on the lookout for wildlife on the ground and in the air, client-focused to the max e.g. fellow traveler mentioned wanting a soccer tee-shirt for his grandson. Sly remembered this, and a few days later, on our way to the airport, stopped at a local shop where one was available. He’s also great at bird and animal calls.”
“Team and Andrew”
“Very experiences guides and high quality of guiding – up to finding aardvark!”
“We have been on a number of safaris in different countries. Our guide, Patrick, was outstanding. Knowledgeable and fantastic at spotting – but many guides are. What sets Patrick apart is his ability to put guests in the right place to get the best views of the wildlife (which is important for those of us keen on photography) . He also has a fantastic sense of humour. It wasn’t just a pleasure to have him show us wildlife – it was a pleasure just being with him.”
“We have been visiting South Luangwa regularly over the last twenty years covering Pope Safaris, Bushcamps, Tafika and the old norman Carr camps and can honestly state that none of these has surpassed Kaingo & Mwamba for animal experience and the exceptional guiding experience gained from Derek, Patrick and the other guides at these camps. With a safari experience stretching over the last 30 years including Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, & Botswana we have never found anything better than our visits to these two camps. “
“Amazing staff, nothing to much trouble”
“Excellent, enthusiastic, knowledgeable staff in a great wildlife area “
“Fantastic safari camp in all respects. Izzy is a great host.”
“Following on our guiding comments I can only emphasise the unique experiences we have encountered at Shenton Safari camps and our visits have given us the greatest wildlife pleasures and encounters in the whole of our African journeys. To return to these South Luangwa camps is comparable to returning home and reuniting with a family”

“Great location, excellent food and a exceptional team”
“Guide: Highly knowledgeable in all fields (area, animals, vegetation) Respecting individual wishes and personal preferences”
“Hervorragendes Camp und außergewöhnliche Betreuung”
“I would thoroughly recommend both Kaingo, and its sister camp Mwamba for safari. The location is excellent, the camp staff, led by the excellent Garth and Liz, are welcoming, friendly, very efficient and also a lot of fun. The hides available to guests allow for excellent opportunities to see hippo and carmine bee eaters. The wildlife in the area is great. We will be going back !”
“It offers Africa as real as it can be. “
Lorraine Van der Merwe
“It was amazing”
“Kaingo and Shenton safaris are a great organization with a huge level of experience and knowledge in the area. They Devote a large amount of time and income to go back into the community. It is a very well run safari with brilliant staff that enjoy working with Derek year after year.”
“Kaingo camp was an experience like no other. to feel so remote, so cut off from the usual world, yet so looked after, so well guided and to have such an absorbing safari experience was incomparable and unforgettable. well done to all the team “
“Kaingo Camp was the friendliest, most comfortable camp with the most professional guides of our 30 day trip to Zambia. In addition, we saw the most abundant wildlife there in 3 trips to Africa. Superb. “
“Kaingo is the essence of Africa. It is located deep in the South Luangwa National Park, and one does not see a lot of vehicles….huge plus. The staff is wonderful, and the meals produced from the kitchen are spectacular. The elephant and hippo hides present the viewer with exceptional sights. When in season the carmine bee eater hide is not to be missed. Kaingo blends well into the African bush, so well that you have curious animals checking it out. Kaingo is a very special place. Kudos to Derek and Jules and their wonderful team for turning out a splendid camp. “
“Kaingo Safari camp was a wonderful experience. Garth and Liz were excellent hosts and Patrick was a wonderful guide. The location is excellent, the facilities are outstanding, and the way that the camp is managed makes for a happy experience. The game drives were all exciting, and the trips to the hippo hide and the boat-hide for the carmine bee-eaters were superb”
“Learned so much being on the ground and getting a different perspective!”
“Love that family owns this camp. Feels like a family. “
“Our stay at Shenton’s Kaingo Camp in September was absolutely magical, from the friendly welcome by the Managers and Staff to the quality guiding (Sandy – marvelous) not to mention the lovely accommodation, wonderful river views, delicious food. It is pretty much impossible to convey, to someone who didn’t experience our trip, just how fabulous it was and how close we were to the animals day after day. AMAZING!!”
“Outstanding food; the best I’ve had on safari.”
“Small Camp, very good managment and full range of safari-possibilities. “
“They help local kids”
“They’re simply the best :)”
“This is based on two years on a safari in Kango. The facilities are excellent and the link with Mwamba good as it enabled us to use their hide which was breathtaking. The variety of animals and birds seen in some 30 minutes was unbelievable. The lower deck at Kaingo where tea is served is also a brilliant viewing spot especially for birds.”
“This was our last stop on a month long trip in 2015, traveling at camps in Namibia, Botswana, and elsewhere in Zambia. It was the highlight of the total experiences, including others from another month-long trip in 2013 in South Africa and Botswana.”
“Camp directly on the river bank, wildlife all around, hides onsite. Tremendous location.”
“Everything about Kaingo is perfect. The setting, guides, safaris, food including magical picnics, walking tours, accommodation and most of all getting up close to the wildlife. Can’t fault it in any way – I have travelled extensively, have high standards and I can be very critical!! Well done Shenton Safaris. You deserve to win in every category. “
“Great variety of different areas, high density of wildlife”
“Hippos and elephants use banks around camp to enter river. Monkeys in trees provide entertainment. Hides exceptional for viewing. Beautiful location.”
“One of the last true wildernesses. Well sited hides and a variety of habitats, both drier inland and the riverine vegetation which allows for such diverse game viewing.”
“Really the most beautiful site in the park with the chalets overlooking theLUANGWA river, the ebony forest, the mopane forests, the plains and the lagoons…my soul stayed behind. The staff encircled the whole experience to make it complete.”
Lorraine Van der Merwe
“remarkable diversity of landscapes”
“The camp is right next to the river, with lodge balconies overlooking the water. superb setting.”
“The camp, next to the river, is in a superb location and the lodges balconies, looking out over the river allow for good wildlife viewing even in the “quiet” hours around lunchtime. Bushbuck and vervet monkeys wandering around the camp make the place very special. “
“The location of the camp high above the river provides wonderful views of wildlife and landscape. This game rich area of the park is accented by lagoons and a beautiful ebony forest.”
“Very happy general ambience, good food, pleasant rooms, fantastic position on the river and happy atmosphere with of course amazing animals and the guides to get you there – especially Patrick and Andrew. “

Beatrice and Rico, Bern, Switzerland. 2013
“Thank you all so much for a truly wonderful time. Kaingo is FANTASTIC! And all the staff, guides and management should feel very proud of the facilities and the atmosphere that they have created. The chefs have catered brilliantly for our coeliac daughter and provide amazing food including a cake for our son’s 18th birthday yesterday. Andrew – words fail me – he is simply amazing, adjectives fail me again.
Thank you al – we are already dreaming about our return.”

“Had an amazing time – 9 hours a day spent with the wildlife (that’s what we like). Fantastic food and wonderful care. We felt really at home, very relaxed and the viewing decks just made our afternoon siesta time. Please don’t dismantle the hippo hide ever! Or stop the hot water bottles mmm… and leave Ed alone.
Thank you so much for a fab time – loads of memories.”

“We have loved our time spent here at Kaingo Camp. This was our third visit to Kaingo and it just keeps getting better and better each time. The chalets, location and everything done and provided by the staff leaves us amazed that so much can be done to such a high standard in such a remote and magical place.
We have been papered and spoilt and look forward to our next visit. Thank you all.”
Lyn and Bruce Wheeler, Sydney, Australia. 2012
“What an adventure for a couple from the bayous of Louisiana. Your attention to details is much appreciated. A true trip of a lifetime.”
Paul & Olive Bonin, Louisiana, USA. 2011
“What a perfect introduction to Africa! Our first ever safari and now already I understand the fascination. Having the 2 camps is an ideal contrast, they are both a fine combination of luxury and simplicity. None of this would be of importance if the staff had not been so attentive and pleasant and knowledgeable. “Anticipation” is a key word – the staff anticipates our needs and the guides anticipate the animals’ behavior. Very many thanks.”
Lorraine & Pat Spector. Colorado, USA. 2011.
“Absolutely lovely! The setting, the staff & guides, and of course the critters! Both Kaingo and Mwamba were the perfect conclusion to our visit to South Luangwa. I can’t wait to return and live in the hides another time. Too much to see and do! Thank you for taking such good care of us and always smiling at the requests.”
Amber Blecker. USA. 2011.

“What can I say that has not already been written? We have been here for nearly two weeks, with two days to go and it has been a true adventure, a realization of what our planet is about! We have seen so much and met so many wonderful animals and people. Creation is not politics or religion, it is our planet earth. Thank you Derek, Izzy, Lisa, Deb, Meyam, Patrick and all the staff.”
Art & Christa Ryan. Australia. 2011.
“Where to begin? Perfection at every turn, amazing staff, and super knowledgeable guides, fantastic hides, brilliant food, absolutely the best African bush experience I’ve ever had. Thank you all so much. I’m running out of superlatives.

“To the fantastic staff of Mwamba… We have truly loved our visit to this glorious paradise in the bush! We love the chalets… everything is perfect and we have been so well taken care of. Meyam has spotted the game so incredibly… The excitement of the baboons yelling, the leopard running, the hyenas chasing!! And we follow for successful encounters. Thank you, thank you, we will return “soon”.
Cynthia & Jim Tuthill. 2011.
“They were right! After reading about how wonderful Kaingo is for the last 18 years, I have finally come here to find out for myself. It’s all true and more. We have had some amazing sightings and have watched game in the most dramatic of circumstances. Each day has brought something new and different. All the camp staff and the tour staff, not forgetting the scouts – have treated us as royalty. Thank you, one and all.”

Peter & Ondine Chadwick. Koweit/Australia. 2011.
“We have had a wonderful and memorable experience here in Kaingo with Izzy, Lisa, Kennedy, Ian, Derek and the photographers’ group. We’re eager to see the brochure! A special thank you for your help and concern with Frank’s injured leg – this is his 8th and my 6th trip to Africa and this camp has been amazing – they don’t come any better for us because of the setting and the people J including the other guests. Thank you.”

“Our visit has been spectacular! One of my life dreams = seeing a pennant-winged nightjar!! (I cried). A night in the elephant hide, which was one of the most amazing experiences we have ever had! We were “sailing” over the Luangwa, just the two of us, reveling in the sounds of the night. I felt as if we owned the river!
Thank you for all the marvelous hospitality… you think of everything… the guides, the food, “our honeymoon” chalet for the 4th time! We will see you soon. With love.”

We have enjoyed fantastic experiences with the wildlife (always remembering the elephant who tried to join us in bed at Mwamba!) and benefitted so much from the amazing knowledge and experience of all your guides. The walks were SO very enjoyable and we have been able to totally relax and enjoy the space and freedom of Nature, thanks to everyone who has made our life in the camps so perfect. We cannot imagine anywhere more special – don’t change a thing!!
We hope to be back one day.”

“Our time with you all at Kaingo has been an experience of another world! Thank you to everyone who has made our time here so special. From the moment we arrived at the airport to be greeted by Ian and the drive back to the camp, the days have passed with such ease “a well-oiled wheel”. We thoroughly enjoyed our night under the stars wth all the sound effects included. The game drives that allowed us a glimpse of the wonderful area that you live in. The expert knowledge that all the guides shared so generously with us. The hippo hide was a special delight, thank you for indulging us with repeat visits. The ever smiling faces of all the staff, with nothing being too much trouble, have been very much appreciated. Thank you to Izzy for all your work in making the arrangements to come here. We are now very excited to be going on to experience Mwamba. Thank you”
Peter & Evanna , Australia. 2011.

“Many many thanks to all of you who made our first visit to Africa an absolutely spellbinding experience from the first minute to the last. It was way beyond our already high expectations!! Spending half our days at Mwamba and half at Kaingo seemed just right. Hats off to Meyam especially for such patience and depth of explanation on all our drives”.
Mike & June, USA. 2011.
“We came from the UK for a week in South Luangwa, we had been here before but our stay in Mwamba was fantastic. The viewing has been spectacular, leopards, lions, kudu, tawny ealges, etc etc just one amazing sight after another, what next? The camp is great, just the right level of luxury but still out in the bush. Looking up out of the roof at the wildlife in the trees and the stars at night was very cool. All the staff have been very friendly and fun, but also very efficient. So in conclusion, a fantastic place and a fantastic stay.”
Alison and Simon , UK. 2011.
“Sad to leave such a beautiful place. The real bush experience. Went for my first bushwalk ever with fantastic guides. We encountered leopard, buffalo, having to walk between them. Learned a lot about little things. Near the car a group of 5 buffalos were waiting for us. Exciting! How great! Having been in their company. To all: many thanks for your hospitality. Very very enjoyable.
Ed and Michelle, Belgium. 2011.
“What an experience! Wondeful situation. A real “Bush” experience. Staff cannot do enough for you. Food is great, company is great, guides are great – everything is GREAT. We will be back!”
Linda & Charlie, Scotland. 2011.
‘When I dreamed of my first trip to Africa, I would never have thought of Zambia. However, thanks to Kaingo, Mwamba, and South Luangwa National Park, this has been more than a dream fulfilling experience! I can’t imagine a more heavenly place on earth…’
Shayna Smith, North Carolina, USA
‘Well, well, well, what an awesome place – I’ve had a smile slapped onto my face since I got here. The staff are A1, the food is 5 star, the accommodation deluxe and the whole way it’s put together is simply a class act. We’ve had leopards, lions and sneaky midnight hippos to make it exciting. Then napped our days away in between, at least when we’re not eating, which is always. Congratulations and thanks to everyone. In fact, come to think of it, I’m not leaving, no way, you can’t pick me up and make me… hey… put me down…NOOOO!’

‘I can’t thank you enough Derek, Jules and all the staff for making our holiday an experience never to be forgotten. We’ve seen all we wanted to see and much, much more ! I hope you will remember us for our world record of SIX LEOPARDS in one day! Your camps really are not to be missed and will always be the BEST PLACE to stay. Thank You and Thank You again.’
‘You are all magicians! Leopards on demand, lions who perform and even pythons for a finale. Banquets in the bush by Medi the sorcerer. I don’t know how you do it. Thanks Derek, Jules and everyone else here. You have magic on your side.”

‘A wonderful four days and nights at quite the best site in the Luangwa Valley. Great elephant, great lion, great leopard and great company. We can’t wait to come back.’

‘An absolutely amazing adventure! Many, many thanks for this fascinating experience – the walks and drives have truly blown us away! Seeing an elephant hours after birth, a lion digesting it’s latest meal within a few feet of us, and seeing so many hippos, crocs and rare birds has been extraordinary. Thank you to all of you for your warm hospitality. This start to our honeymoon is unforgettable! Come visit us!’
