The Iconic Sundowner
What is the Iconic Sundowner? Many first time safari goers in Africa are introduced to the term, but explaining it is not enough, it is something that needs to be experienced, it needs to be lived first hand. Someone describing a Sundowner will let you know that it is a time on afternoon safari where you stop and enjoy a drink during sunset, but it is so much more than just that.
Firstly, the view is fundamental, there is nothing that compares to a beautiful sunset in the African bush. Our guides always position the vehicle in a perfect space where one can watch the sun go down, possibly with some animals enjoying the last bit of warmth and light for the day. Secondly, the drink, an iconic Gin & Tonic (G&T) is preferred by most, but really it is the drink of your choice, the one that you enjoy the most.
But lastly the most important part of a Sundowner above all else is the time for reflection! To look around and marvel where in the world you are right at that moment, to feel the African soil beneath your shoes, hear the birds and animals calling out after another successful day at surviving in the bush.
Africa is a place that touches the soul in a special way, it can give you a feeling of what it truly means to live. To see things for the first time brings on a childhood memory of learning about your surroundings. The Sundowner is where that feeling is felt, where you can be left breathless and know you are in one of the last untouched wildernesses in the world.
