Lion Tug of War
Out on morning drive, we spotted a lioness atop a tree across the gully. We made our way through the gully and found that the lioness was feeding on an impala carcass on a low lying branch. There were two lions below the tree watching their pride member with envy. They tried to climb up a fallen branch to join her, but they couldn’t match her climbing abilities.
The lioness in the tree got nervous. Not wanting to share, the lioness tried to move the impala carcass, causing it to hang precariously from the tree. The two lions below saw that the impala was hanging off the tree and quickly changed their minds about climbing. They rushed around the tree and lept up to grab on to the dangling impala. That’s when the tug of war ensued.
The lioness in the tree tried her hardest to pull the carcass back up but the two lions on the ground had a better hold. The impala carcass split and the lioness in the tree was left with the leg that she was holding. As soon as the impala hit the ground, three other pride members that were close by came rushing in for a piece. A struggle broke out between the 5 lions over the carcass. The lioness that was left in the tree descended with the leg and quickly made her way off without being noticed.
Suddenly, we saw a leopard makes its way down from the very top of the tree. The leopard quickly descended away from the lions, into the gully. We then realised that the leopard had been hiding at the top of the tree this whole time and there was no doubt that that was his kill!
