“Would you like travel insurance?” “How would you like to pay for your travel insurance?” “We’ve included travel insurance as part of the package.”
These and other such statements are probably ones that you’ve heard many times. Many clients decline the purchase of travel insurance, though, thinking that they have no plans to cancel.
Travel professionals usually get a signed waiver by those clients who decline the insurance. But there are really two components to the insurance discussion that should go on with you.
The first, and what travellers usually think about, is the trip interruption/cancellation part of insurance. If the client thinks that they can afford to lose their prepaid purchases in case of trip interruption or cancellation, then that is their choice.
But the second component deals with purchasing insurance without trip interruption/cancellation coverage. This would protect the traveller for medical, medical evacuation, trip delay, baggage delay, baggage loss, and other possible aspects of travel. Surprisingly, insurance without the trip interruption/cancellation included is very affordable, by making it a zero cost trip.
Even with the low cost, many travellers think that the need for these kinds of insurance “can’t happen to me”.
A look at just one aspect—medical evacuation—was done by Travel Agent Magazine.
The article suggests that travellers might want to read about a real-life experience without medical evacuation insurance.
Although this article (open the link above) describes a travel tragedy away from civilization, the need for medical evacuation insurance could just as easily arise from a broken hip, a heart attack, thrombosis during a flight, or other unforeseen occurrences occurring nearer to cities.
The emergency medical evacuation insurance coverage provides benefits payable up to the policy limit if the insured suffers a medical emergency and requires transportation. It’s important to understand that this coverage is not medical coverage. Instead, it is coverage for medically necessary transportation.
Based on a survey of travel insurance providers, it’s recommended that travellers have between $50,000 and $250,000 USD. in medical evacuation coverage.
But there are many other unplanned things that can happen on a trip.
• Luggage is lost and not located for five days.
• Due to a late arrival, the client misses a connection.
• The flight is cancelled for over 12 hours and not-rebooked.
• Getting ill with the flu and needing to be hospitalized.
Too many people don’t understand that they are responsible themselves for the unforeseen parts of travel, which WILL happen. This is important for any destination being considered, but especially so for Africa.
